Never plant aspen trees near your lawn. Back in August of 2006 I blogged about aspen trees. A grove of Aspen trees can actually be just one tree because they share the same root system. The aspen is the biggest plant in the world.
The house we bought last year has three beautiful aspen trees in the front yard. Unfortunately they are trying to start a grove of aspen trees in our front grass. This summer the baby aspen trees were growing much faster than the grass.
In the picture above you can just see the baby aspens. The picture below gives you a close up.
Aspens are poplars just like cottonwood,White poplar,Lombardy,Balsam. They love water and are prone to suckering allot especially Aspen which is the worse of the worse. Sumac's also do this. I saw your photo of the trees near your house. I would not ever advise planting a poplar, willow,or sumac that close to a house especially in front yards your just asking for trouble. They love water and they will get right into your septic tank or sewer also they can get into your foundation and brink up drive ways and ass fault. It is to late to trans plant them unfortunately. I highly recommend you remove them and the stumps. Also if you plant more Aspens in future plant them as far back away from house as possible. I would recommend a Birch or a oak in front yard or Japanese maple not a poplar. Also if you decide on removing your aspens you can dig up the roots and grow them into new trees and if your yard is some what big plant them in back where they wont cause damage.
